Not so pretty kitchen with pops of yellow

Today is the day that I show you my not so pretty kitchen with pops of yellow. I’ve kept my kitchen long time out of the spotlight, because it’s not the prettiest place to photograph and certainly not a perfect kitchen. Not even close.

It’s small…tiny, that is. When we moved here from Canada, I had to get rid of half of my kitchen “stuff”, as I don’t have enough storage and it simply didn’t all fit in the cabinets.

I really wanted a breakfast area in it, so we wouldn’t have to bring every meal out to the dining room. So I cramped in a small table and 4 chairs. There is definitely no room for a breakfast bar or anything fancy like that!

I’m keeping what I use daily on the counter tops, I have no other place to put it, so it does look cluttered at times.

My dream kitchen would be white, all white, maybe some accents, but very “plain”. This one, well, it has all kinds of shades of beige, brownish and did I mention… beige! I love beige, just not in this kitchen maybe.  It’s also tiled from top to bottom and sometimes it reminds me a little of a butcher shop. I mean, it would be really practical, that if I happen to slam some meat on the counter all the blood stains come off easily, right? LOL. No meat gets slammed here, so really, did it have to be all tiled?

When the fridge is open, no one can enter or leave the kitchen, because it is right next to the door and there’s no room. And when the kitchen door is open it slams right into the chairs. There is a big door leading from the kitchen to our not waterproof storage room. That door takes away a lot of possibilities to have more furniture space.

While I’m writing down all the negative points about my kitchen, and believe me, I could go on with this list, but I’ll spare you, I feel like calling the guys from “love it or list it” ( know that show??) and have them make me love this kitchen!  Even though we could just move, because we only rent this house.

But, here comes the but! I came to like this house a lot and it is our home right now. Moving is not always an option, it is also costly, even if we only rent. And there is nothing really out there that would be a lot better for us right now. We have a pretty great house! So, it is smaller than what we used to have, a lot smaller. And this kitchen is not the prettiest kitchen or the most functional kitchen. But, you know, I can make it work. It not that big of a deal!

I can cook in my kitchen and prepare meals. I really have everything I need. I actually think it looks quite cool now with all those pops of yellow. It could be worse! The door to the storage room gives us a lot of light and that is great! I’m happy the table and the chairs fit right in there, even if it is tight, but it’s doable. The tiles, oh well, there are worse patterns out there, right? I hung a big chalkboard on the wall above the table, so no one really pays attention to the tiles anymore, lol!

My kitchen might not be the perfect open concept white kitchen, but I actually like it a lot and I can live with it! I kinda like it, that when I cook something really smelly, that I can close the kitchen door and open the door to the storage room and outside to ventilate, so the smell doesn’t spread all over the house.

A not so pretty kitchen with pops of yellow 10

This microwave is the last pop of yellow I’ll show you from my kitchen. It’s quite cool, don’t you think? It even looks a bit vintage if you want, if there is such thing as a vintage microwave…lol. My girlfriend, the one who gave me this fun Ikea Cabinet last summer, also gave me her “old”, let’s call it “vintage”, microwave! It works just fine and I didn’t have one. I don’t use it that much, but it does come in handy sometimes. Anyway when she mentioned it was yellow, bright-yellow, I knew it was supposed to be in my kitchen!

And that’s my kitchen for now! My not so pretty kitchen with pops of yellow that works just fine right now!

Thanks for stopping by the blog today, have a great weekend!

Katrin, I love your little kitchen, you’ve made it so warm and cozy! I love the touches of yellow, they really pop and make it cheerful along with all the little touches, the wheat grass, the yellow handled utensils, the chalkboard! And that microwave is so awesome! You’ve got a great kitchen and I’m sure that the girls love it!

Thanks Nikki! I’ve gotten used to the space and it is kinda nice now, there’s not much I can do to make it bigger or change the cabinets or anything like it, but that’s ok. It’s a kitchen and yes, the yellow is a really happy touch to it! Thanks for visiting friend, have a nice weekend! Hugs!

Are you in the UK because this is a very normal looking size kitchen for here?
I’m loving how you are making the best of it, the yellow is lovely. I recently added yellow touches to our boring white hall and it cheers me every time I come in now.

That’s fun, yellow is a happy colour, isn’t it! No, I’m in the South of Spain, here it is a normal size as well, I lived in Canada before and well, everything is bigger in Canada! lol…Thanks for stopping by Julie! 🙂

No, I’m in Spain and it is a normal size for a kitchen here as well! In Canada everything is bigger, and I got really used to it, but am ok now! A lot less to clean, which is great! Thanks for the visit Julie! 🙂

Your kitchen is so cute! I am in a rental and can’t do much to change the actual cupboards and hardware of the kitchen so I completely get you! I would love to paint my ugly oak cabinets a nice fresh white and re-do the back splash, but I’m stuck with just adding cute accessories 🙂
I may use some yellow now, it looks so good in a kitchen!

    • Katrin
      09/03/2016 at 22:52

Thank you so much! Yes, there isn’t much point in doing a whole lot to a rental kitchen, and adding cute accessories sometimes make up for all of it! Thanks for the visit 🙂

You know what my first thought was when I saw your kitchen? I WISH that is what I got to sweep and mop. LOL

I actually think your kitchen is adorable and cute! You have really added some beautiful pops of color that make it feel like home. I also love the modern style of cabinets. But I get it, I love white kitchens too, they make a room feel bigger and fresher.

I love your kitchen! The bright pops of colour make it so inviting. I feel you on the ugly kitchen- I’m renting too, and I have a tiny kitchen with barely any counter or furniture space. It’s last on my list of rooms to make over because I just don’t know what I can do with such little space!

But, you’ve inspired me to bring some more colour into it!

Hi, Katrin!! I think it must be hard when you move from a bigger house to a smaller one, even more when the design is completely different. I’m used to that kind of kitchens lol, even smallest ones, but the ugliest thing for me are the tiles on the walls, not as backsplash, but everywhere! But as Lynn says, it is as it is, and unless you own the house, it’s not worth to invest any money on it. Anyway, you solved it really nice with those pops of yellow!
    Enjoy the weekend!

    • Katrin
      06/03/2016 at 16:05

Thanks Pili, yes, I guess I got used to the kitchen and made the best of it, I definitely won’t invest a whole lot. It’s not that important after all, right? I have everything I need. Have a great weekend!

Katrin, i love your kitchen!! I think it’s charming and sweet!! I like that you’re making the most of your space right now. I love having a kitchen that is closed off because like you said there are benefits when it’s stinky, but also if the kitchen isn’t the cleanest you can always close it off and nobody will see. Lol. The chalkboard you made looks great above your table and did I mention I love those chairs? Only about a dozen times right?! That’s a cool microwave too!!

    • Katrin
      06/03/2016 at 16:15

Aww, thanks so much Keri, i’m happy you like this kitchen! Making the most of things is kinda fun, isn’t it! You’re right, closed off kitchens are amazing for when you have a sink full of dirty dishes, you don’t want to do in the moment! 🙂

Good Morning Katrin, so tickled to glimpse inside your kitchen. One of my favorite life mantras is “it is what it is.” This helps me accept those things I can’t change and move on. It would appear you’ve adopted a similar mantra with your kitchen. Though not perfect, you accept it for what it is and have even found aspects of it to appreciate. Plus, when the time comes to design your own kitchen, you will have collected all this wisdom on what you don’t want…which is as important as what you do want! And truth be told, you kitchen truly has a charm about it! Maybe its because I am a yellow lover too.

    Have a lovely day

      04/03/2016 at 14:20

Hi Lynn! You’re so right! It took me a while to get to this conclusion, but it is just true, that it is what it is….with everything, and I’ve come to see the beauty in imperfection by living in rentals and making the best of it. It’s actually quite fun! Thanks for the mail earlier about the site, I hope that was just a one time misbehaviour! Have a lovely weekend my friend and thanks for your visit, I always love it! 🙂

Very funny post, Katrin. I can never picture you slapping meat onto the counter top. lol! Your kitchen is actually very pretty, the pops of color really make it stand out, and the floor tiles are rather neutral. You should some of the ones they have here with mosaic tiles. You know my kitchen is bigger, but I find the bigger it is the more junk you end up having in it. So at least, in your case you have your storage area and keep everything out of sight. What makes yours special is all the cute little touches you have added, that little plant on the table, the blackboard and that adorable vintage microwave! You look at the positive and accentuate that.

    • Katrin
      04/03/2016 at 14:16

Hi Mary! I’m happy you found my post entertaining, lol! Well, I can be a really sarcastic person, it is hard to show that in posts sometimes…You’re right for sure, the bigger, the more stuff you think you have to put in the bigger space, lol, that’s what happened to us in the Canada house that was twice or more bigger than this. It is what it is and that’s ok! Thanks for your compliments on my kitchen style! Have a great weekend friend! 🙂
