Ikea Hack DIY Tassel Blanket

Loving and living the minimalism lifestyle as a blogger isn’t always easy. I am constantly on the lookout for new projects, crafts & decor, but, at the same time, I want to keep our home bright and airy without buying “things” every time. My motto is “Live Simply” after all. And I mean it. Therefore, I’m trying to change up the decor and use, what I already own. And it is fun! I mean, I do buy the occasional craft supply like hot glue and yarn for example, but hey, instead of getting a new tassel blanket, I up-cycled the Ikea throw we already own. And in this case there was no visit to the shop necessary, because I still had this knitting yarn in my craft closet. Perfect! So check out this fun Ikea Hack DIY Tassel Blanket!

What I’ve used:

Ikea Gurli throwΒ [mine is beige, but they don’t sell it in this tone anymore, only in gray, which I also own and love. I used the beige throw for this project, because the gray yarn did not match the gray throw and I liked the contrast of beige and gray better]

gray or gray gradient knitting wool yarn [similar hereΒ or gray here]

sewing yarn and needle

The knitting yarn I have used is a gradient gray knitting wool I bought a while back and I just love the different shades of it. It really makes for a nice nordic boho look on this blanket.

I made my tassels using this easy tutorial by Design Love Fest.

When all the tassels were ready, I placed the ends of my throw on our dining room table and measured where to sew on the tassels. I had 12 in total, so I put 6 on each end, spreading them out evenly more or less. Doesn’t have to be exact.

Using needle and thread, I quickly sewed on the tassels by hand in a few stitches. I used double the yarn to give it extra hold, when it needs to go in the washer. I have not washed it after adding the tassels, so I cannot say if they lasted, but I am planning on washing it on gentle and air dry. Fingers crossed!

Sorry for the poor lighting… this happened late Saturday night πŸ˜‰

And this is how it looks right now on our sofa…. it actually adds to the little nordic boho vibe that I have going on there and I love it!

You definitely nailed the boho vibe and it’s very pretty. I admire your tenacity with sticking to minimalism. I, on the other hand, can’t resist a clearance sale or a trip to the thrift store. Guess, I’ll really have to get serious about it. Thank you for sharing with us at Celebrate Your Story, and have a great weekend.

Thank you Sandra. I just love seeing my stash getting smaller, but I have to admit, I also love to thrift and oh don’t remind me of clearance, haha!

This is such a nice way to make an old blanket look new again. I like the idea of updating what you already have.

Aww this is adorable. I think everything looks better with Tassels Katrin. Now I want to do this too, but I have no small blankets like that.

What a beautiful throw, tassels add charm to anything! I like your sense of minimalist, it’s airy but not cold.

You are quite literally in a class of your own Katrin. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something you’ve made that isn’t simply gorgeous and so easy to do too. You just have that magic touch. Love how your tassel blanket turned out

If you ask me… A minimalistic lifestyle and a visit to IKEA do not really go well together, or do they? Love the tassels!

Ha! It is quite the challenge Marjan, but these blankets have moved continents with us, they’re old, so I consider that a success! At least this time I didn’t need to go purchase anything to make something new to me… let’s see how far I go, lol!
