Ikea Bekvam step stool hack

The other day I finally purchased the Ikea Bekvam step stool! I know, how did I cope without one for so long? Well, today I’ll show you my Ikea Bekvam step stool hack and you might run to get one for yourself…!

Ok, so my excuse, [not that I needed one, but..] was, that it would come in handy if I wanted to reach something really high! Or, for Amelie, to help out in the kitchen, it’ll be a lot more comfortable to just climb onto this step stool, instead of the chair she used so far…..well, sort of anyways…. I actually didn’t really need this step stool, except, that it’s just a perfect hack, a perfect make over and I really wanted to have it. Does that happen to you? I mean, what do we really need?  I’m not gonna go into that right now, no worries… I just wanted to get this step stool, to get my creativity out and have a nice easy project! And I thought that I was gonna use it for a little deco as well of course! And it was only 12 Euros, so why the heck not!?

It is the perfect make over, at least for me, because there is no sanding or any kind of big prep required, as it is plain, untreated, solid wood. Perfect! Here  you can find it at Ikea [ no, no affiliate link here, just Ikea love]…

I started by painting all the pieces in a light grey~ish tone before assembly. That’s so convenient, no tricky corners to paint, just plain pieces… I gave it about two coats of paint.

When all was dry, I grabbed the two side parts [legs] and spray~painted the bottom part, just underneath the first step, in gold. And when that was dry, the assembly began! Super easy, I just followed the instructions and all took me like 5 minutes.

Here’s how it looked by then:

But I still thought that I wanted to add something to the top step, so I taped off two stripes with washi tape [I still don’t have any painters tape…]. Then I covered the middle [not shown in the pic below] and bottom part of the stool, cause I didn’t want it to get any accidental spray paint and sprayed the gold paint on the top part, to end up with two horizontal stripes.

And this is how it turned out:

And then I styled it two different ways:

The first is beside my armchair as a little tray~holder. If I actually ever wanted to use it as a step stool, this would be an easy grab! The little tray on top has a cute little side story as well… My daughter Stella found it on the curb for me! Isn’t that so cute? Finding stuff for mommy on the side of the road. That was in Canada where people just put their stuff out, here that doesn’t really happen. So she was at Grandma’s house one afternoon and their neighbours moved out and left a whole lot of stuff outside for the garbage truck……or kids like Stella to grab…. and bring their mommys. It was a different colour and she brought it home and was super proud! We cleaned & spray painted it and I kinda love it! She still sometimes says: remember when I found this for you on the curb?? LOL. I love it!

The other way I styled it, is as a little side table for my sofa. You know, how I’m looking to change out my current side tables, I have a whole post about it hereTurns out it’s not that simple getting stuff shipped from North America over to Europe, or let me say, it’s pretty costly… so I will have to think of something or try to find similar ones over here…sniff… But in the meantime I thought, I could also use my Ikea Bekvam step stool hack as a small tiny side table.

I used a crate and filled it with books to make it a little bit higher and then placed the lamp on top. Like this the lamps on each side of the sofa also are on the same height, which I think looks nicer.

And that’s my Ikea Bekvam step stool hack friends! What do you think? Which style is your favourite??  Do you own this step stool already, are you getting in your car right now to head to your nearest Ikea to make your own hack?  Let me know, show me, I’d love to see!

Katrin, I’ve never been to an IKEA store, so I’m a bit out of the loop when it comes to their furniture styles, I love the clean lines and the modern feel that it has. And this little stool turned out so cool! Love the gold tipped legs and the stripe on top, it looks perfect in your home! I also love that it is mult-functional, and it looks really great with the “found” tray on it beside your chair! Love it!

It looks wonderful Katrin!! Now it doesn’t seem as an Ikea step stool, it has its own personality. I really love a good Ikea hack and this is one of them!!
By the way, Stella was so cute to bring you that tray… that’s adorable.

I love Ikea stools. I like how you were able to use these for side tables. My Ikea stool is too short and not sold anymore, but I repainted it too and love it. Can’t be the prices at Ikea.

I love ikea pieces because they are so easily hackable into brand new things. We’re going to being making a bench soon enough for our bedroom to hold our sheets!

Love it! You would never think step stool when seeing it. Amazing what a coat of paint can do. I love that you used the washi tape. I am horrible about having everything on hand to do a project and often substitute.

      13/04/2016 at 19:37

Thank you very much Brianna, I still haven’t gotten painters tape, lol… I really have to, cause all my nice washi tape will be used up if not! Thanks for your kind compliment!!!

Don’t you love it when your kids find stuff for you! My granddaughter saved a cup with a lid because she knew I would find a use for it. I thought the stool was very pretty with the washi tape and then you took it up another notch. You styled it beautifully and we’re so happy that you are sharing your links with us again this week at Celebrate Your Story link party. Have a fun and productive week!

This is a great makeover. It’s great that this little table comes unfinished – makes painting so much easier. Love your idea with the pattern, and you’re so right, it makes a great side table. Looks wonderful!

Hi Katrin…so, I really love where I live except that the closest IKEA is 4 HOURS AWAY! I mean…who does that? Think it should be a universal law that everyone should have access to IKEA within 2 hours…is that so unreasonable? In any event, I’m always drooling when I see everyone’s IKEA hacks…it’s like they are just teasing me with all the IKEA wonderful-ness they have access to! And your stool is no exception. First of all, of course it’s handy…and of course you needed to buy it! You would’ve been foolish not too. Second, you made it so ‘Katrin’…it looks wonderful. I love the touches of gold you added…Perfection. And I love all of the many ways you can style it.
    As usual…well done my friend.
    Hugs!

OMG, I can’t believe what you just told me, 4 hours away! That can not be! I’d not be able to deal with that, lol! I have mine, like 15mins. away….although that isn’t that good sometimes either, if you know what I mean. wink wink. But, can’t you order online? Although it’s way nicer to go of course, but don’t they deliver.. ? Oh well, you can always make a weekend trip out of it and spend the night and go two days in a roll, lol! Oh Thank you for coming by today! Made my day! Hugs!
