How To Hygge In The Summer

I´m sure you´ve heard about Hygge! It´s almost impossible to ignore this new hype in the home decor world. Hygge is a lifestyle and might even be the ¨recipe for a happier life¨ ! I am a Hygge kinda girl, I really am and so that´s why I wanted to tell you about how to Hygge in the summer today!

Just in case you have not heard about Hygge before  [which is totally ok] :

It is a Danish concept on how to live cozy and comfortable, creating a warm atmosphere at home and enjoying life, being surrounded by people we love. My sweet friend Michelle from A Crafty Mix actually also explains it along with a lovely DIY that goes with it all on her blog!

When I hear and read about Hygge, all I think of are snowy and cold outdoors, being curled up under a blanket on the sofa, sippin a hot cup of coffee while watching a family movie. It´s high season is Christmas after all. That´s when it´s dark and the days are long during Scandinavian winters, so Hygge and it´s million candles do lighten up the spirits!

But!  Hygge can totally work during the summer as well! Why wait til the winter. Or the winter that isn´t really one, like here in Spain, where I live. Why not Hygge in the summer! Here are some ideas and tips how to have a Hygge summer and be totally cozy and relaxed:

How To Hygge In The Summer

For us, summer is a little bit divided into two parts. The first is travel to see family and the world and the second is relax and enjoy a stay-cation at home by the beach and with our friends. Our first part is coming to an end and I am happy and thankful we´ve had such a fun time, but am now ready to rewind and enjoy our home and surroundings. All Hygge style!

1. Enjoy your outdoor space!

Take your daily life outside! We love having breakfast, lunch and dinner outside on our simple patio, invite friends over for BBQ, spend time out reading and enjoying the weather. On cool nights we cozy up with blankets, candles and a glass of tinto de verano [red wine mixed with lemonade]. The wine works on hot nights too, lol!

2. Family Time

On very hot days, crank up the a/c  put on a family movie or play board games and have bowls of ice cream to go with it all.

3. Summer Crafts

With all that lovely extra time we love getting crafty outside or inside, depending on the heat…

4. Beach Time

Hygge at the beach! We pack a picnic and spend a whole day or just the afternoon at the beach, relaxing, playing games, swimming… now if that´s not Hygge…

5. Enjoying The Slow Life

We get up late and go to bed late and we have siestas if we feel like it. I don´t wear a watch in the summer and we simply don´t care about time. Lunch time can be at 3 pm and dinner at 9:30 pm one day, it can be at a totally different pace the next. And no-one cares… We basically live in swim suits and light summer dresses, beach hair and what ever comes our way is ok. Although we make plans with friends, we´re really relaxed and laid back when it comes to keeping up the routine, if you can call it one…

That is such a lovely way to think of it Katrin. Being surrounded by the ones we love is the best way to feel warm and cozy. And also doing the things that make us happy no matter what the weather is like outside.

This sounds like the west coast style. Beach, warm air, hair in a ponytail, not makeup, no schedule and no stress. I remember those days. Have a wonderful summer Katrin, it certainly sounds like you are.

    Hi Katrin!
Well, you taught me something I didn’t know. I think I’ve heard of “Hygge,” but didn’t really know what it was. Now I want to know how to pronounce it! Hygge for me is gardening or camping with my family, but I love the wintertime Hygge too…watching the fire in the fireplace, and I absolutely love to go for drives in the Winter when you can see a long way into the woods. That’s one of the reasons I love Winter. Blessings to you & thanks for sharing this at Sweet Inspiration!

Aw Thank you so much for your sweet comment Florence, I appreciate it. You pronounce Hygge something like ¨hooga¨ or similar anyways… Gardening and camping sound like a wonderful way to Hygge. But I know what you mean about wintertime, it´s just so special. Thank you for stopping by 🙂

I am all for time at the beach! We don’t do much real travel because by the time we get some time away we are in need of down time.

When I retire . . . My occupation requires discipline and a strict schedule, I only get 3 weeks acation a year and most of it is used up by doctor appointments. American employers on the whole are not very progressive . . .

Oh I see…. maybe on weekends and long weekends though? Once the work routine sets in, it´s hard to find extra time, right? I hear ya about all those doctor appointments, I´m trying to get it all done now in August when I can, they take so much time. Thanks for stopping by Naomie!

Hygge sounds delightful! I’m all for your summer tips – except the beach part. I have never liked sun, sand or water without soapy bubbles added to it. Give me cold weather and lots of snow. However, all the other parts are some of summer’s best times. Enjoy your Hygge summer! Thank-you!

It is delightful and I love this lifestyle. I´m with you on the beach part, I´m a northern girl, but my girls and husband love the beach, so I got used to it and try to enjoy it as much as I can. We live close to it, so I want to like it more, you know 😉 The vacuum cleaner however, is my best friend 😉 Have a lovely summer too Ellen and Thank you for the visit!

Take that watch off and just live in the moment. Wishing you many more hygge moments all year long my friend
