Back to school desk makeover for Int’l Bloggers Club

Welcome to this months edition of Int’l Bloggers Club! It’s the end of August and that means back to school for many! I know that for many the school routine has already begun, and you’re back to getting up early, homework and all that! For my kids here in Spain, the first day of school will be the 7th of September and that’s because they are going to a private, bilingual all day school. Other public schools start on the 12th here. Summers are long, from the End of June until the middle of September almost, but we do have less days off during the school year.

So, in time for that, I’m showing you our back to school desk makeover for Int’l Bloggers Club!

In case you missed last months post, find it here.

This summer it was time to update a few things in my older daughters bedroom. We bought her a new bed and changed up things a little, so her Ikea desk didn’t look too nice with the rest of the room anymore. I had spent quite a bit on the new bed and mattress and all that and didn’t think of throwing out her, except for the colour, perfectly fine working desk.

This is how the Ikea desk looked like before. It’s a cheap pressed wood kinda desk, but otherwise stable and in good shape still. It comes with a matching shelf, which will also be painted soon!

We decided to paint it white, to match her new white bed and to be able to add pops of colour and not have it too busy.

So we took the table apart, which wasn’t a big deal, it’s three pieces basically and the girls [Amelie really wanted to help out her sis] sanded the parts a little bit, and then I sprayed on the primer. When all of that was dry I spray painted the pieces white on both sides. I used golden spray paint for the drawer. All dried really quickly, cause it was sooo hot here and I tried to get it done in the mornings, as those are cooler and I have more shade in my backyard.

Anyways, it was super windy here all week long, but I really wanted to get this project done and not wait another week. Yeah. Don’t spray paint when it’s windy. But you probably wouldn’t, it’s just me, I’m this crazy lady that has to get her stuff done when planned, doesn’t matter how. That’s why I ended up with white eyelashes and eyebrows at one point, cause the wind had turned, while I was spraying… and you can imagine… Everyone had a good laugh!

I’d definitely recommend using spray paint for this kind of dresser, it is so quick and convenient and my daugher didn’t want the distressed look and all that, so spray paint is perfect!

While we were at it, we also spray painted her bulletin board white and then taped off parts of it and added stripes with golden spray paint. Sorry, there aren’t any photos of how we updated the bulletin board, because I took them outside in the shade and they all came out really dark 🙁

We added some fun decor to her desk and she’s super happy with how it turned out!

I’m sure you’ve noticed the wall decals?? Aren’t they so so pretty? I found them over at Walls Need Love and I love how well they go with the whole girls room style! You can find them in a variety of colours too.

Thanks for the chuckle this morning reading about your spray painting in the wind escapade. I would have done the same thing, determination is my middle name. 😉
Your daughter’s desk looks so fresh and current spray painted white. Love how you’ve decorated the desk too – especially the wall and DIY bulletin board!

Marie, lol, glad you had a good time 😉 I’m never spray painting with this wind ever again, but I’m happy I got it done and out of the way. It just bugs me when things like the weather mess with my plans….Thanks for the visit 🙂

This desk is a perfect re-do for the bedroom, love the pretty pink! It looks brand new again and the bookshelf will too. I love how you see potential in everything, so resourceful! I doubt that you ever waste a thing, that is so green. Thank-you for this wonderful post, as always. P.S. I want to add that I love the reupholstered bench, my comment wouldn’t post for me!

    • Katrin
      30/08/2016 at 19:01

It does look completely different and my daughter really loves the space Ellen. I do like to throw out stuff that I cannot find use for, you know, and sometimes i regret it and wish I hadn’t done so… but this desk was still in really good shape and deserved a makeover and I’m glad I did it. Thanks so much for stopping by, and I have no idea why the bench post wouldn’t let you comment, I’m sorry… Have a great day!!

Katrin, i love this desk makeover!! How funny that you had white eyelashes and brows from spray painting; however maybe not funny at the time. This whole desk area looks so glamorous! The gold and white, along with pink accents, the decals on the walls and the details on the desk give it a fun and glam look!! I bet your daughter loves it!!

    • Katrin
      29/08/2016 at 23:15

Thanks so much Keri! Yes, it was funny, we had a good laugh and I will never spray paint again when it’s windy, lol. I learned! My daughter is really happy with the space now, so it was worth it!

Katrin this desk came out stunning. The whole area looks so professional and put together. Girl, you should get paint on your eyebrows more often if the end result is going to look this great. The desk is perfect with a touch of gold and the way you have painted the cork board is also a pleasant surprise. I never would have considered it. The decals add such a pretty festive touch to an otherwise bare wall. And lastly, I really love that desk light. I had no idea that it lit up but it looks so cute. This is such a nice look for her room, much more grown up.

    • Katrin
      29/08/2016 at 14:59

Aw Thanks so much Mary, we are happy with the desk and the whole area now. The shelf is next, but I will wait for cooler temps and no wind, lol! She is almost a teenager now, so it goes well with her and her attitude, lol!

  • Pili
    29/08/2016 at 09:08

Katrin, that’s a wonderful makeover! I imagine Stella being super happy with her new desk and I love it in white, it makes it lighter and cleaner. The decals are so fun! I guess all her friends thinks she has a cool mama!
I learned the hard way about spray painting with wind, too… I think it’s kind of Murphy’s law, every time I prepare things to spray paint a sudden breeze appear and you find me cursing all the time!

    • Katrin
      29/08/2016 at 14:57

Hahaha, spray paint and Levante wind don’t go well together at all…. but at least the desk got finished and yes, we are happy with how it turned out! Thanks Pili!!

  • Michelle
    29/08/2016 at 09:02

Lol, I’d love to see your white eyelashes and eyebrows Katrin. Your daughter must be super impressed. Everything works so well together and those decals are just perfect.

      29/08/2016 at 14:56

Lol, yes that was funny but oh my so scary too…it took me a while to get that off, lol! I was freakin out there for a bit. Thanks so much Michelle, we are happy with the desk now!!
