6 ways to easily update any patio

While I’m still in beautiful Canada, enjoying some time off and hanging out with my husbands family, I do miss our home a bit and wonder how things are back in Spain… I’ve mentioned before, that our best friends are in our home right now, enjoying their vacation by the sea. I made sure, that the house was in tip top shape before we left, so that they’d have a comfortable stay. Well, one of those spaces is our humble and small patio in the back. So today I’d like to show you 6 ways to easily update any patio without spending tons of money or time.

You know, our house is a rental, but will be ours real soon, meaning we can change up things to how we love it. But so far, we’ve done quite a few things here and there to make it feel like ours already. It doesn’t really take much to even make your rental feel like your sweet home.

One of the spaces we really enjoy is our small backyard patio. We spend quite some time on it, so we wanted to make sure to have it comfy and fun without having to spend a ton of money.

6 ways to easily update any patio

1. Curtains for shade

Our patio gets a lot of sun, which is great, but when the temps climb up to 35 and higher, we need shade. So I grabbed these curtains from Ikea and a shower curtain pressure rod to hang them up.

Last years patio… The sofa spot and curtains are the same this year though.

2. Outdoor rugs

I´ve added a few of these cheap, small Ikea rugs for now, but really want a bigger one for the sofa area. Like the one below for example. Isn´t that one gorgeous? Well, the whole patio is… oh my! Check it out [ The fresh Exchange ]

3. Plants

I love greenery, faux or not, unfortunately I have a brown thumb and two bunnies, so only a few plants survive, like cacti and succulents put up high. A while back I shared this easy succulent pallet planter and it´s really a highlight on my patio. So pretty.

4. Lounge areas

We have a big lounge sofa on the back patio and we got it a couple of years ago on sale at the end of the summer. It is super and we hang out there a lot. It doesn´t always have to be big though, as we also have a small pallet lounge in the front, which we enjoy as much as the one in the back.

All I needed for the one in the front were two pallets stacked on top of each other, a small outdoor cushion and pillows for the back.

5. Side tables & plant stands

I´ve DIYed a few, like this one. Read more about it here.

This little side table which also works as a plant stand, is not on the blog and was so so easy too. I grabbed this Ikea stool and an Ikea tray [this one is the same size, just a different design] and simply added velcro on each. Like this they can still work as tray and stool if needed. But for now I like the plant stand / side table version.

6. Lanterns & Lights

Isn´t it so lovely to sit outside at night and have little lights everywhere? It sure makes for a cozy and summerly atmosphere at the same time.

I’m sure your friends are loving your beautiful space Katrin, who wouldn’t. There so many interesting bits and pieces that make it homely. You kinda just want to park your butt down and contemplate life. You might have a brown thumb, but you sure have the golden touch when it comes to decorating.

Katrin I love all of your ideas. The curtains are the best. I only wish we had somewhere to add a rod. And you know I am crushing on that tray with the blue design. Enjoy yourself in Canada!
